My work investigates ideas about artifice, time, and cyclical processes by constructing layered sculptural installations with ephemeral materials to explore light, form, and perception. Through installation, I layer drawing and sculptural processes to create a multi-perspectival experience and test the permeable membranes of matter and space. I use materials to manipulate space and allow viewers to have a corporeal interaction with the work, while glimpsing at the multiplicity of possibilities beyond the surface. The artifice of natural and manmade environments are reflected in my material choices. For instance, plastic emulates natural surfaces like flesh, water, or ice, and is such a pervasive element it integrates the natural with the artificial. These dualities blur the line between real and imagined and echo distant futures where our bodies and our environment may well be composed of alternative substances resembling originals. I pull references from nature as well as from scientific diagrams, to traverse a sense of place theoretically and experientially. My recent work uses maps and topographical information from South Florida, particularly looking at the effects of water movement underground and the erosion of landforms. Through this process I hope to make visible the underlying structures of my local environment, using a hybrid of data-based input and imaginative realities for viewers to traverse both visually and somatically.
