My Modern Nomad Drawing

Inspired by a discovery of photographs of Somail nomad women from the 1900s and their draping of textiles over themselves, this illustration was born. This style of draping - especially to cover the head - merged with the of styling her hairline in wavy swirls (a style common with African American/Caribbean/ Afro-British women, achieved with gel to create the patterns and style the hair) creates a beautiful union of two cultures in a in harmony. An addition of a cowrie shell - said to be a symbol of wealth and earth - represents the Goddess of protection which is very powerful and connected with the strength of the ocean. I chose to do a simple linear drawing to focus in on the detailing and capture her essence. This piece is available as a digital print.
