My sister's boyfriend watching TV, 1984 Drawing

When I was nine, a man turned up at our front door with a Samsonite suitcase. He was from Turin in Italy, and said he was my oldest sister’s boyfriend and would be with us for two weeks. He stayed for ten years. He moved with us to the hotel in Brighton I grew up in. He stole from me, assaulted me, played games and watched TV with me, introduced me to Italian disco. He taught me that people weren’t to be trusted, and that sometimes violence was the answer. He stood up for me, was generous to me, interfered in my life for me. He was always there. I remember him like this, on the floor by the sofa watching TV, ruminating on the past injustices and plotting future revenge.
