I walk all over downtown and through the different neighborhoods of Toronto taking photos of dumpsters, alley ways, construction sites, storefronts and whatever else draws my eye. I love the grime of the payphones, and the glow of the neon lights. The chaos of convenience stores windows and the graffiti covering everything it can. At night when the raccoons and skunks run the streets I can’t help but feel amazed that life like that can still thrive in a concrete jungle. It’s more than just the typical city animals I have seen fox and coyotes running down major streets in the early hours of the morning, otters swimming in the rivers and an incredible number of birds. They all call this city home just like I do. Scum city explores the coexistence of life within this massive cosmopolitan city. Using the photos as references and the inspiration when I get lucky enough to see a deer walk by in the valley or a possum pop out of a garbage bin I started putting it all together.
