Address Mr Sultan Ahmed (LATE) ART GALLERY 78 - Railway road LAHORE " Science, Philosophy, religion all have limits. Art Alone is boundless" From ALLAMA IQBAL'S Note book SULTAN AHMED entered the world of calligraphy some twenty years ago and has produced an arry of sublime pieces in th Quranic script. His words have been displayed in PAKISTAN, IRAN, ITALY, IRAN, CHINA, INDIA, SAUDI ARABIA, and UK. and have won praise from critics and connoisseurs. SOME, indeed, have found a respected place in the national catalogue of calligraphy. SULTAN AHMED was born in Lahore and grew up in the traditional time-honoured environment of the walled city. Since his early days he was given to observing with a childlike admiration the Quranic scripts adorning the walls and the exteriors of the mosques of the great city. His fascination with the revered script, however, did not, in the first instance, draw hin to calligraphy. he began his career as a painter of the film and remained so for almost twenty-tow years (1955-1977) Sultan Ahmed become disenchante when martial law his imposed on the country."That was the time'. he says." when i really felt u was losing faith in the future of culture in Pakistan." he left poster painting for good and desparted for the holy vity of "the Ka 'aba" to perform hajj. it was there that he left a strong urge to take up calligraphy. "its was as though i had been blessed with some divine inspiration. i prayed for mercy in that great house of GOD and was irresistibly drawn towards inscribing holy aayats. "it was , in a way, a joyous affirmation of his early fondness for the art as well. Sultan Ahmed paints in water colours, Mostly in red , yellow and blue. "red, yellow and blue", he says, "are the only colours, in the universe and the reat are deived fro them. I saw these colours in a rainbow at a heigth of ten thousand feet, a very rare sigth at such an altitude, while on may way of Mecca." sultan ahmed came to calligraphy only two decades ago but in these twenty years he has compressed the energies of a lifetime. his ardour and vision are visible in evey arc and curl of his exquisite pieces. His "frescoes and mosaics" are not instant creation but the result of strenuous craftsmanship . sultan ahmed's art in an architecture of faith. every letter is carved with the utmost precision and the whole exhibits anattractive harony of tone and colour.
