My work deals with the on-going psychological and moral battles that take place within the physical body as in, a priory boundary between the public and the private/intimate. I am exploring a state of isolation, which is never the same for two individuals or for two bodies. This continuous battle with one’s self is a very particular state of solitude and that is why my figures are portrayed on a blank backdrop of nothingness in order to focus solely on their bodily experience; whereby a nuanced gesture becomes all telling. My figures are in a mobile state of inertia, which is a paradox, however they are trying to break free from natures forced upon boundaries, the body. In my work, my ultimate aim is to portray the physical appearance of a psychological or moral battle within a person. In many cases these figures allude to a roentgen like depiction of the body with an emphasis on the spinal cord and on the male and female sexual organs. These particular segments of the body play a crucial symbolic aspect in my work, due to the fact that the spinal cord along with the brain make up the central nervous system. The spinal cord is our transmitter to the brain, in regards to what we see, hear, feel, smell, taste and think about. Also, for sexual stimulation to occur there needs to be a connection between the spinal cord and the brain. These so-called moral or psychological battles cause a person to enter into an emotional frenzy and lose common sense, and for these reasons, I intentionally split the core of a human being into many fractions. Thus, the major battle to be waged within the body as a vessel is between nature and culture-the unbridgeable gap.
