About The Artwork
Robert Oppenheimer was an American physicist and scientific director of the Manhattan Project, a secret military research project during World War II that led to the development of the first atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was instrumental in developing the atomic bomb, but was also concerned about its effects. After the use of the atomic bomb against Japan, he voiced his concerns and was later targeted by the US government for his perceived sympathies with communism. Oppenheimer died in 1967 at the age of 62. When the first Trinity test atom bomb exploded in New Mexico, Oppenheimer thought of a quote from the Bhagavad Gita: "Now I have become Death, the destroyer of worlds."
