Solace The lowveld sizzles yellow Under the orange ball. Through the golden foliage Something stealthily crawls. A yellow blur emerges And stuns an impala calf. Commotion quickly follows The herd is cleft in half. The thundering stampede soon Comes to an abrupt end And Haraka the cheetah Can feed her cub again. She drags the corpse to her den But senses something missing Underneath a rock she finds A bloated python hissing Aggrieved and aggravated Her loss makes her numb She mauls the listless snake Lethargic with its tum. The cheetah’s blows begin to Take a terrible toll The helpless serpent chunders A cub’s cadaver whole. Tries to slowly slither But lies listless in vain. Haraka simply sniffs Her cub’s rancid remains The killer of her child Lay helpless in her den. She trod on head lowered Not seeing it again. Was her brain too primal to deem Revenge as the solution, Or was she far too wise to gain Solace in retribution?
