About The Artwork

This original art was inspired by the vineyards near Cassis during a summer storm. STORMY VINEYARDS Chalk Pastel & Acrylic Paint on Paper 50 x 70 cm // 19.7 x 27.6 inches (about) 2022, Provence Series PROCESS & MATERIALS I create each original chalk pastel painting on 100% cotton, deckled-edged, cold pressed heavy weight art paper. My preferred chalks come from the artisanal pastelliers in Roussillon, Provence, in tandem with Senneliers chalk pastels - a very high quality, hand-crafted, elegant range which blends and layers perfectly. I finish out the piece with heavy body acrylic paint details. As part of my process, I create a layered thickness to the chalk itself by using art fixative spray in layers as I work - not just as a final finish like you would a varnish. In this way, I can create a pastel painting which shows more texture and depth than your average pastel drawing on paper.

Avery Ches is a chalk pastel painter and photographer focusing on big sky landscapes and nude forms. Originally from Kentucky, she calls New Orleans, LA her home in the US and spent 3.5 years living in the Mediterranean region. You can follow her daily art practice on Instagram. Avery was born and raised outside Lexington, KY, where she spent considerable time outdoors in the rolling hills of horse country and in the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky where her extended family lives. She moved to New Orleans for her undergraduate studies at Tulane University where she spent two years in the Naval ROTC and graduated with degrees in Environmental Studies. There, she fell in love with the magic and culture of the city and calls New Orleans home even while traveling and living abroad. After three years of living in Aix-en-Provence, France, and for several months in southern Italy, much of her work has a southern Mediterranean theme - inspired by the endless fields, mountainous landscapes and dream-like, ethereal light of the regions.
