Swan Street a.m. represents an early morning walk through the coal yard landscape. The horizon line shifts with each new position in space and each glance--from above and below the mounds of coal stored in varieties of weight and size. My images show peace and solemnity in this place, where the gravity of the land forms is balanced by the tonal shifts of color and density in the atmospheres, changing in each frame. I hope the viewer will find peaceful and meditative moments in the presence of these drawings. Charcoal is the perfect medium for the landscape wedges, with values of gray pastel depicting the somber skies above each horizon. Occasional measured lines of colored pencil float in some of the frames, reminders of the analytic human hand and mind--thinking its way through the drawing.

Concepts of space, of Earth and its horizons; of the density of matter; the colors of light and the quiet beauty of natural forms--these ideas continually inspire me as an artist. Images of land and atmosphere have been rendered thousands of times and in a myriad of ways, yet I search within these objects and phenomena for a meditative and untouched space--worthy of my personal inquiry and documentation.
