"Symbiosis" Drawing

Significantly influenced by sufi ideology of unlearning and stripping of acquired knowledge and identities, Huma’s work evokes disturbing questions of division and social hierarchy arising from human obsession with destruction documented under heroism. She believes that her practice lies in the process rather than the final piece. Actions like shredding and restructuring pages from history books on war, reducing letters from words to dots and the use of sufi poetry and the use of sacred geometry. Comes forth as a process of unlearning a plethora of information being fed over a period of time. Her work projects as pages out of a book narrating a utopian history consisting of redesigned pages from violent events and put next to sufi poetry from various poets like Mevlana Rumi, Bulleh Shah and Khwaja Ghulam Fareed. Manifesting creatures like bees, birds and fish as symbols refer towards individuals evolving out of concocted boundaries and achieving spiritual enlightenment. In totality Huma’s practice melts down to a consistent effort in breaking down and simplifying the complexity of fabricated information and directing it towards the importance of one single entity. One minimal existence that contains all.
Huma is a Dubai based artist of Pakistani origin, raised in Saudi Arabia. Having a deep connection with diverse cultures embeds richly in her practice. She is a graduate of National College of Arts in Lahore, Pakistan and has successfully shown with galleries like XVA, The Foundry Downtown, Morrow Collective, Tashkeel in Dubai and Art soch contemporary in Lahore Pakistan. In 2023 she was endorsed by Saatchi art’s curator Rebecca Wilson and was selected to be the featured artist for Saatchi art.
