About The Artwork

A newly discovered orangutan species, Pongo tapanuliensis is the rarest great ape species on the planet. Until recently it was believed there were only two species of orangutan: the Sumatran and Bornean orangutans, both of which are critically endangered. The new species is found in the isolated Batang Toru forest in Sumatra, Indonesia. And it’s estimated that there are fewer than 500 individuals left, making it very vulnerable to extinction. The orangutans are threatened by hunting and habitat loss. At completion of this artwork there were less than 500 Tapanuli Orangutans remaining in the wild.
