About The Artwork
Derrick Rose is one of my favorite basketball players. Therefore, it was only fitting that he should be one of my leading athletes in the "Legends of the Game' series. His importance to the sports world, Chicago, and young hoopers everywhere cannot be measured on the basketball court alone. Injuries seriously derailed what could have been a legendary career, but what makes Rose shine is what it took for him to get on the court and come back, time and time again. So why did I choose this name for the Piece? How is Derrick Rose like a rose that grew from concrete? Well, he is a basketball player who overcame many obstacles and challenges in his life. He was born and raised in a poor and violent neighborhood in Chicago, where he witnessed crime and hardship every day. He had to work hard to develop his skills and talent, and he faced many injuries and setbacks in his career. But he never gave up, he always fought back and proved himself on the court. He is like a tree that grew from concrete, because he survived and thrived in a harsh environment that could have broken him. He is an inspiration to many people who face similar struggles in their lives. The imagery is inspired by the Tupac Shakur poem of similar name. With this in mind, it was necessary to show the balance the finesse rose showed on the court with the tenacity and grit he displays on and off the court. From High School champion and phenome to rookie of the year and MVP, Derrick rose is a beacon of hope to Chicago, proof of what determination and will power can do. And as a rose has thorns, Drose is far from perfect, but this piece is to celebrate the victories that come from effort and self-belief. I hope viewers will relate to the human element of his struggle and appreciate the overcomer mentality this piece illustrates. May the vivid colored pencils inspire artists and young athletes to reach their aspirations.

My name is Jeremy Phelps and I have been an artist practically since birth. Though all kids are natural artists, most of us put down the artistic tools and 'grow' out of it at a certain age. I never did. I have always appreciated the animation in cartoons and games, the way Disney makes magic happen on the big screen, and mostly the way fine artists make us feel with their two- and three-dimensional extensions of themselves. I've always known that this is my gift and my place in the world, to be an artist. I love to experiment with different mediums and subjects. I can create beautiful landscapes with colored pencils, vibrant portraits with pastels, and abstract compositions with acrylics. I enjoy the challenge of switching between different techniques and styles, and I feel like each medium has its own charm and personality. Sometimes I wonder if I should focus on one medium and master it, or if I should keep exploring and learning new things. Maybe I am afraid of missing out on something, or maybe I am just too curious and adventurous. The same dilemma applies to my subject interest. I like to draw animals, women, celebrities, historical narratives, plants, and anything that catches my eye. I don't want to limit myself to one theme or genre, but I also don't want to confuse my audience or lose my identity as an artist. How do you balance variety and consistency in art? That's a question that only time will tell for me.
