ABOUT THE ARTWORK

An ink and correctional fluid map of Los Angeles's Westside region. It's home to enclaves like Little Brazil, Little Britain, Little Odessa, Little Osaka, and Tehrangeles; UCLA; world-famous Venice Beach, and a handful of places with "Beverly" in their name. I wrote a primer about the communities of the Westside for "California Fool's Gold."

Eric Brightwell is an adventurer, explorer, cartographer, guerilla gardener, and writer... Eric Brightwell was born in Iowa City, Iowa but primarily raised in Lexington, Kentucky and Columbia, Missouri. Inspired by fantasy maps and text adventure computer games, he began drawing maps when he was about nine years old. He studied film theory at the University of Iowa where he made a point of visiting every block of every street in the city and its suburbs. After moving to Los Angeles in 1999, he began exploring and drawing maps again, beginning with a map of Elysian Park.
