When the space shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986 it sent shivers through the marrow of the nation. Not only was one of the astronauts the first woman in space, it also seemed to end the rose-tinted dream of easy space-travel that America had gotten held up by NASA and the current president Reagan. It seemed to be the end of American, and in extension the world, human discovery of space.
