ABOUT THE ARTWORK
I explored the neighborhood of Westwood on Los Angeles's Westside in 2018. Westwood Village was, for many years, a thriving vibrant neighborhood but today is rather depressed. The neighborhood is now best known for being home to the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). I included the map in piece I wrote for my series, "California Fool's Gold."

Eric Brightwell is an adventurer, explorer, cartographer, guerilla gardener, and writer... Eric Brightwell was born in Iowa City, Iowa but primarily raised in Lexington, Kentucky and Columbia, Missouri. Inspired by fantasy maps and text adventure computer games, he began drawing maps when he was about nine years old. He studied film theory at the University of Iowa where he made a point of visiting every block of every street in the city and its suburbs. After moving to Los Angeles in 1999, he began exploring and drawing maps again, beginning with a map of Elysian Park.
