About The Artwork

I got to know the designer for the Shakespeare Globe Theatre which was going to be built on the south bank of the River Thames. In the early 1950's the American actor and director Sam Wanamaker arrived at Heathrow airport and asked a taxi to take him to the Globe Theatre in London. The taxi driver said there is no Globe Theatre in London. This shocked Sam Wanamaker. He went to work in Liverpool but spent 25 years to raise money to built The Globe Theatre in London. I became a family friend of the Wanamaker's he had two daughters one who became an actress, Zoe Wanamaker. My book Shakespeare & Friends was published for The British Museum Shakespeare exhibition in 2012. This book features portraits of major British writers I did at the Hay Literary Festival and the Oxford Literary Festival. I curated a Shakespeare touring exhibition first at the Globe Theatre, then at The Royal Academy of Arts, both in London. Then at The Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford upon Avon. His works include: Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, King Lear, Twelfth Night, The Taming the Shrew, Julius Caesar. Widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and one of the world's greatest dramatists. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon"

I have been painting and drawing for over 35 years. I have done this in eight countries. Hillary Clinton has one of my Afghanistan portraits of a woman, where I lived for three and a half years. I have two books published for the British Museum, Shakespeare & Friends which features portraits of major British writers which I did at Hay on Wye Literary Festival and the Oxford Literary Festival. The other book Afghanistan Portraits is a collection of charcoal portraits drawn across the country, many in remote villages many miles from Kabul. I was Artist in Residence at 10 Downing St from 2006-2007 while Tony Blair was Prime Minister.
