Stephen Coelho is a figurative artist whose subject matter is the face and figure as well as landscape, seascape and still life - raw material for his restless pursuit of the single, cohesive image wherein the familiar ritual of its making also seems to have something to do with a sense of things. Draughtsmanship, borne of rigorous objectivity and patient interrogation is, he believes, of fundamental importance, particularly in drawing from the life model, generally regarded as the most challenging of artistic disciplines. There is the distant echo of a past life as an art director and designer, inherited genes that lend his work, in terms of its form at least, a measure of graphic grit. He has lived in Suffolk, London, East Sussex, France and Cornwall and now lives and works in St. Leonards-on-Sea.
