ABOUT THE ARTWORK

My artworks are mainly autobiographical, and I try to recreate those personal experiences through my art. I use my hair as a thread to stitch clothes to fashion baby dresses to give them an intimate touch, building the unbreakable bridge of ownership, my inseparable part. It was a tradition once to teach embroidery and sewing in our homes and schools in Bangladesh. I also designed and sewed my own clothing, especially Sari, Kamij and Shawl. I also use needles, the symbol of healer, use to create bonds and my hair, dead yet constantly growing hair, to express the eternal cycle of life imbibed with love and promise. New life grows inside of the womb of a mother and later born as a child. My creations are my children, growing outside of my body, nourished by my love and imagination. I would like to communicate with my unborn child, through my art; they are as real as the biological children I might have I collect my discarded and uprooted hair, all I store with care. I feel them with care that I have never received from anyone. I want to give them a place in my art. The process of collecting, cleaning and storing hair one by one is like a ritual for me, a carefully arranged activity like taking care of an infant. This is also a way to develop a kind of bilateral relationship with myself: I am my mother and my child. The moments we define as our life in the time continuum become significant as we weave our love around the people we care about and how we communicate our stories and make the fabric of life.

I am a Bangladeshi-born British interdisciplinary visual artist living and working in Canada. I organised many solo exhibitions and participated in many group exhibitions in different countries. My work is autobiographical in nature. I use the unique signature of my body to explore my identity in time and place. I use my hair as a thread and my fingertips as brushes during this process. I imprint my emotions on different surfaces to express the inimitable chaos of my inner and outer worlds.
