About the Artist

Dimitrios Manios

Greece

I was born in Thessaloniki, Greece. I studied Architecture at the School of Architecture of Thessaloniki. I have been working as an architect in Greece, since 1991, and in Berlin during 1995-2000. For twenty years I have been a collector of Art Nouveau / Art Deco small objects and artifacts.

I hold a PhD in theory of architectural design. My research work focus on the relation of architectural design with the previously applied mechanical/technical methods, as well as with the advanced technical means. I have published a monograph on architectural theory: Architectural Design and Advanced Technourgia, Athens: futura, 2009 [ISBN 978-960-9489-36-2]. Teaching architectural design in University level Institutions has been another open field of experimentation.

Since 2013, I have been working on an experimental design-based research project, entitled “Line Cultivations”. My works have been influenced by this project: My works as a revelation of man in the extensive fields of the artificial.

About the project “Line Cultivations” | The surface of the paper is being engraved. A groove, a deepening, where the graphite or ink is deposited in, is being created in an off-white background. Off-white, since the paper, like the line which has been just engraved on it, decay with time, and essentially, they have already represented this decay. The surface of the paper is being colored with lines that converge; is being stirred, deepened.

With this discreet sowing of paper with lines, the surface’ s limitations are set aside. The background as a distinct level or as a distinct deepening is set aside. The lines are extending and intensified in space; are indicating the limits of space. The lines are considered as multidimensional, unlimited, ultra-fine ones, easily modified during-their-convergences.

We're moving in a distance from the topical or utopical references of design, from the dynamics of implementation and the phenomena prevailing in existing, developing and potential loci. A reference field is formed, a field where the cultivations of lines, these initial configurations of lines as primary material, extend: From the human to the domain of the lines and vice versa. From the human, from the range of his dispositions, from the range of the conventional and transcendental movements of his body and spirit to the domain of the lines and vice versa.
