Ash IV Artwork

Ash IV is one of five panels produced from and in response to mortality and renewal in the landscape. My Montefanna studio sits in the Tuscan hills outside of Fiesole. It overlooks olive groves. In Spring 2022, just after war broke out in Ukraine, the olive trees were pruned, their branches and young leaves gathered and burned, transforming the hills into smoke-filled, and light-filled spaces. Both vibrant and still. It was an uncertain time of beginnings and endings, a place of emerging figures and disappearances. The series is made from ash gathered from the hills. It is set onto a hemp and canvas surface on wooden panels, hand made by a local craftsman and tinted with natural bitumen and local pigments.
