“I love how people interpret Los Angeles in different ways. Designer Nicki Voss took a photo of the city from Griffith Park and transformed it into a quilt.” (Mary Forgione, LA Times 12/09/2021) Nicki Voss’s work is characterized by a fascination with mapping, geometry, and geography. Her work in quilted textiles originates with outdoor photography translated into shapes and color compositions materialized in cloth. This technique evolved from earlier work in paper with three-dimensional and origami-like qualities. Quilt making, with the use of templates, grids, and math, was a likely extension in which to apply systematic collage techniques to cloth instead of print media. The slow, methodical, and organic process of arranging small fabric shapes into dense color compositions creates a tangible landscape, equally abstract and structurally familiar. In 2022, Voss was selected for the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Artist Roster. She is the owner and designer for Textilepop, an artist manufacturing studio of contemporary art quilts inspired by iconic landscapes and the outdoors. Textilepop is a Los Angeles County registered Community Business Enterprise – Women Business Enterprise, and in 2022 received the State of California Small Business (SB) certification.
