About The Artwork

Inspired by traditional Japanese camellia motifs and craftsmanship, this artwork is a testament to the beauty of traditional textiles and the preservation of cultural heritage. Utilizing paulownia wood sourced from kimono chest-of-drawers, I breathe new life into discarded pieces, infusing them with storytelling and luxury. At the heart of my creation lies the auspicious symbol of the camellia, meticulously depicted on a softly brightened grayish background. Symbolizing anticipation and nobility, the camellia's delicate pink and white hues embody good fortune and protection from calamity, echoing its significance in traditional ceremonies. The fabric itself, once part of a formal kimono, showcases intricately woven patterns with subtle gradations, transforming under different lighting conditions. Carefully selected motifs from the kimono's hem, shoulders, and sleeves are woven together to form a cohesive composition. Framed within antique kiritansu wood, this artwork not only celebrates Japanese craftsmanship but also evokes the spirit of wabisabi—a reverence for imperfection and impermanence. Each piece of paulownia wood, prized for its resilience and natural luster, carries with it a rich history. Through the repurposing of these chests, originally designed to safeguard precious kimonos from fire and moisture, I pay homage to tradition while embracing sustainability. The legacy of these chests, dating back to the Edo period (17th cent.~), is intertwined with tales of resilience and protection—a legacy I honor by repurposing them into frames for my art. In every stroke and every detail, I invite you to experience the essence of Japanese culture—a harmonious blend of tradition, nature, and craftsmanship. My artwork serves as a bridge between the past and the present, preserving the beauty of tradition while embracing the possibilities of the future.

My name is Okamoto Lena, I am an artist based in Japan, where my art is known by the name "ikasu". In my works, I offer a new approach to savoring antiques. Drawing inspiration from traditional patterns symbolism, using antique kimono textiles, kiritansu chest-of-drawers wood, washi paper as materials, I breathe new life into preloved kimonos - traditional Japanese garments, repurposing them into pieces of art. Delving into closets that have housed these kimonos for decades and centuries, I meticulously curate art sets and collages, blending colors, patterns, and symbolism behind them. Antique kimono is originally a one-of-a-kind masterpiece, crafted with bygone or close to bygone techniques - hand-weaving, hand-painting, gold thread embroidery, etc. My mission is to infuse symbolism of Japanese traditions into everyday life, sharing the wisdom they hold. Accompanied by narratives detailing techniques, motif symbolism, and color significance, each work is a testament to preserving cultural heritage. Originally designed for meditation rooms and retreat/yoga centers, they resonate with individuals who appreciate meaningful art, authentic antiques, and wisdom of Japanese traditions. During last year, I rescued almost 200 kimonos and 3 kiritansu chest-of-drawers, was featured on 80+ media inside and outside of Japan, including News Picks, J-Wave and Japan Today. Inside Japan, I get orders from kimono owners with requests to transform kimono they don’t use into memorable and meaningful art pieces. I also collaborate with businesses, organizations, hotels and restaurants, who use my works mostly to welcome and entertain foreign visitors who resonate with Japanese culture and philosophy. My works give meaningful antique touch to spaces in Sweden, Canada, US, Singapore, Malaysia and Japan.
