About The Artwork

Sarita Colonia is a popular folk saint in Peruvian syncretic religion, blending elements of Catholicism and indigenous beliefs. She is often invoked for protection, healing, and good fortune, especially in the context of marginalized or unconventional lifestyles. When God says no, theres always Sarita to say "maybe", and give some kind of hope. Sarita is also a popular legend and a symbol of the construction of a new national identity that integrates the Andean and the migrant within the popular imagination. She is considered a saint despite the fact that she is not accepted by the Church.

Born 1965 Lima, PerĂº. Currently sharing my time between working as a lawyer and studying a visual arts career. Due to my work as a lawyer, in art I tend to address social and political issues, with special interest in diversity, migration, transculturation, modernity and inclusion, seeking to contribute - from art - to the consolidation of a Peruvian national identity, without leaving aside a critical attitude towards the social reality of my country. Another fundamental axis of my work is writing and rewriting, combining images, song lyrics and phrases, doing and undoing, playing and altering meanings, sanding and erasing photos, words, news, experiences and stories in different languages that are integrated, one with another, amalgamating in the final result of their works, captured on canvas and/or on the non-traditional supports chosen. The presence of words with different calligraphies, fonts and stencils, as well as the letter as an abstract sign, is also a repeated constant in my works. To the contrary of my legal experience, in painting I almost never plan. Mine is an active process mixing colors and different materials until things get interesting. Mainly working with layers. During the process, some old layers appear and become a part of the painting, melting with the new ones, giving it a new and rich overview. Trough art I found a way to express feelings and emotions without talking. Urban and graffiti style, acrylics, collage, stencyl & mixmedia.
