About The Artwork
Dorothy Arzner (1897-1979) was one of the most prolific Hollywood film directors at the coming of "talkies" and the first woman to become a member of the Directors Guild of America. Dorothy directed Clara Bow in her first talkie, “The Wild Party” and to help Bow overcome her fear of talking while filming, Dorothy rigged a microphone to the end of a fishing rod to follow Bow as she moved around the set, thus creating the first “boom microphone.” Arzner’s films portrayed free-spirited, strong women and helped launch the careers of Rosalind Russell, Katharine Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Claudette Colbert, Joan Crawford and Maureen O’Hara, among others. While Arzner never talked of her own sexual orientation, she defied the female conventional dress of the day, keeping her hair short and wearing masculine suits with ties. “Dorothy” is made from strips of film tape and images of the women Dorothy directed from a vintage Hollywood movie review magazine

Viewers are often initially drawn to my work because of the bold colors, patterns and movement, but upon closer inspection they are pulled into a world of tiny details, one bleeding into the next, creating a fantastical narrative from the bits of the original source material that remain unobstructed. I begin each piece by deconstructing a single source material so that I no longer see it in the form it was originally presented, looking to uncover repeating forms, images, colors and ideas that will form the basis of the artwork. As I start to build the layers of the artwork the process is less an act of collage as a re-weaving of the original source material in a form that allows the viewer to interact with the ideas contained in those materials in a new way. Perhaps my favorite comment I regularly get from visitors: “I could get lost in your work for hours.”
