The intent of “Focus: University Student Studying At Saint Petersburg Beach” is to be a contemplation piece on calmness of mind that comes with relaxed focus. This sentiment is expressed in my planned forthcoming book on American or Florida virtues: “Seemingly oblivious to the passage of time, this university student focuses on her studies as the tide creeps in, the sun sets, and a storm looms on the horizon. The power of focus dissolves distractions in the pinpoint of awareness. Clarity of thought emerges radiant and self-luminous. Every entrepreneur, inventor, or athlete understands the power of focus. There is a paradoxical thrill in the stasis, the absolute calmness of mind. Waves, storms, and chatter—in synergy—relax whatever sticky attraction they held on the mind. From this inner stillness, calm focused thought emerges—like a reflection and pulsation—clarifying all perceptions of the outer world. And despite the metronome of words on paper and waves crashing against legs, this singular thread of focused thought becomes a string for pearls. Ideas become reflective jewels on a necklace. Wear it—the vastness of this quiescent thought—and become, in your calm breathing, the ocean, the sun, and the sky.” I painted this in Brooksville, Florida during the COVID-19 quarantine.
