About The Artwork

"Gene.sys" | The cycle has been completed. We reached the beginning of a new reality, a new world, a new book. We are the reflection of a creative, transforming, and destructive force. Let there be light. 2021. This work is part of a composition of three printed and framed digital paintings, which have an embedded QR code that allows viewing the content of the piece in 3D through a mobile device (Augmented Reality). The name “Gene.sys” refers to the first chapter of the Judeo-Christian bible book which introduces the creation of the universe. At the same time, it suggests a composition of nomenclature in the format of “filename” used in computer operating systems. In biology, a gene (from genos (Greek) meaning generation or birth) is a basic unit of heredity and a sequence of nucleotides in DNA or RNA that encodes a gene product's synthesis, either RNA or protein. .sys is a filename extension used in MS-DOS applications and Microsoft Windows operating systems. They often contain device drivers or hardware configurations for the system. This project was born from the interest in capturing a moment of humanity in which I consider, important changes are taking place in the perception and delimitation of reality. Changes in our social interaction and our roles at the individual and group level that affect our relationship with others and ourselves. Technology plays a key role in these new relationships. We are part and product of a modified and self-managed human Gen ("Gene.sys") that allows controlling devices and configuring systems. The context of the pandemic accelerated a process of adoption of technologies that had been influencing the breakdown of paradigms, expanding, facilitating, and even forcing new ways of managing work, study, and almost all kinds of human relationships to which art is no stranger. So, I intended to use emerging technology resources for representing this moment, materializing that feeling of a new cycle. Renaissance awakened from the world situation of 2020. The Genesis element of the work constitutes an allusion to the period in which sacred art and the elements of the religious tradition of the Middle Ages largely influenced the artistic norm for a long time, extending even during the Renaissance of the 15th and 16th centuries. To the aesthetics of sacred art, I incorporate pre-Columbian elements such as gold, obsidian, onyx, quartzite, and jade that constitute the materiality of the beings in the work. The result is Judeo-Christian imaginary elements embodied in Latin American stone bodies. The hardness of the stone contrasts with characters with a human countenance, who in turn pose the emergence of new beings. These beings are reborn in an augmented coexistence through technology (headsets, earplugs, protective masks) and the new global possibilities of living the reality of simultaneous interconnection and disconnection. A new world. The images were created through digital means. The characters were modeled and sculpted in virtual reality. The texturing was carried out with simulation of natural materials, mainly stones. The digital manipulation of light (ray tracing) was inspired by Caravaggio's chiaroscuro. The composition of the digital elements was carried out in 3D software, for their subsequent introduction into an augmented reality application that allows their connection to the material component of the paintings. The use of the combination of techniques and the result allows using the painting as a window between the real plane and the virtual plane. In this way, the rupture of the traditional and two-dimensional character of the work emerges as creation, by simultaneously giving it a three-dimensional category that attributes the particularity of residing in both realities at the same time (physical and digital).

I'm a New Media artist focused on visual arts that mainly involve the merge of the physical and the digital worlds. I started my career by mixing graphics and video compositions in real-time, to later develop projects for more than 10 years through the technique of video mapping and the artistic direction of multidisciplinary interventions. Currently, I spend a lot of my time experimenting and developing new forms of art that rely on motion graphics, augmented reality, and virtual reality.
