About The Artwork

Collage using acrylic paint on acid-free tissue paper. Each piece is coated on both sides with a layer of Golden soft gel medium. The balance of curves and colours across the picture combine for a pleasing harmony so the whole plays together, the shapes in the sky and the waving willowherb. The distressed treatment adds to the timelessness of the scene, with just a slight reduction to the water to enhance the quality of stillness. The picture has been created on a cradled wood panel treated to archival standards with GAC 100 to preserve the work. The tissue paper has been coated on both sides with Golden soft gel medium and the picture given a final layer of protection with Golden UV satin varnish. The sides of the wood panel have been painted black to create a contrast to the colours of the picture. No frame is required. Signed on the reverse with description and title.

You’ll usually see me thinking about composition, playing with pattern and testing spatial relationships, that sort of thing. As for anything else I think about how it affects all the above. I enjoy looking for unlikely structures and trying out fleeting interractions. The question of balance is never far away. When it comes to meaning, the torn and faded materials in my collages show where man has been. I suppose everything reflects an unidealised view of humanity. But I’m also attracted to the opposite, the wide expanses of nature (especially the sea) where there’s not much humanity at all. My influences may not be apparent… I keep coming back to Cézanne and Matisse.
