Thalmann is a Swiss-Canadian artist who used to live and work in the Beaches Toronto area before relocating to Northern Ontario where she operates out of her art studio. Her style is in abstract expressionism and most of her paintings are within the medium to large scale range. Every year or so there is a selection of new paintings displayed. Thalmann has been showing and selling her work since 2004 through her fine art business Thalmann Designs. Much of the inspiration behind Thalmann’s work has come from her beloved city of Toronto where she lived for most of her life before moving to her new beloved home in Northern Ontario, and, from her many travels to Europe and the Caribbean. Throughout her collections one theme that stays constant is her depictions of both cityscapes and seascapes. In addition, she has a background in psychology, is a practicing registered psychotherapist, and holds a master’s degree in clinical psychology. Thalmann is highly interested in human behaviour and the concept of the unconscious. She draws upon her own life experience and interactions with others for inspiration and finds human behavior, broadly defined, to be one of the most fascinating areas of study and a rich source for creative expression. Process is a very crucial and major aspect in Thalmann’s work. Every picture is in a constant process of change and she only stops working on it once she feels it depicts the right emotion(s) when looking at it. Everyone experiences emotions in varying ways, and she wants to leave it up to the eye of the beholder to interpret each piece independently for themselves, thus encouraging a broad range of interpretations. Thalmann understands art as being an interactive dialogue between artist and observer.
