BIO 2026

Rai Escalé (Barcelona, 1964) is a Catalan painter and visual artist. His work has been exhibited extensively in Europe and the United States, and his illustrations have appeared in numerous Catalan publications.

He lives and works in Bràfim, southern Catalonia, and maintains a long-standing artistic connection with Bratislava, where since 2007 he has collaborated with Slovak painter and illustrator Miloš Kopták as Miroir Noir.

His individual painting practice is centred on the human figure and on the transformation of existing images. Working with paint, ink and printed material, he builds layered images in which fragments of photography, advertisements and popular culture, and of course art history, show through and coexist with painted interventions and other physical accidents.

Alongside this, Escalé has developed the Cecilist series, a large body of work based on interventions into historical artworks or their reproductions, exploring the unstable relationship between original and copy, the acts of appropriation, destruction and creation, and the way we perceive the images we inherit from art history.

In recent years his work has moved increasingly towards black and white drawing, pushing the same layered, appropriated imagery into a sparser, more self-sufficient language.
