About The Artwork

As a part of my extinct animals series I was inspired by the Irish Elk's and its history. The Irish Elk lived in Europe, Northern Asia and Northern Africa approximately 11,000 years ago. Unable to adapt to the subarctic conditions of the last glaciation or the marked transition that occurred after the final retreat of the ice sheet, the largest deer that ever lived became extinct, the last one in Ireland dying around 11,000 years ago. I chose to draw an image of the Irish Elk in its dead or skeletal state and create a stencil with my drawing. Then I created images of what the Irish Elk ate; leaves. I composed the imagery with selected paper, an abstracted acrylic background and geometric shapes made of decorative papers. The style I work in is a blending of abstraction and realism which I call Emergence, the process of coming into view or becoming exposed after being concealed. I hope that the viewer will see the beauty of the Irish Elk bird and remember how fragile life is.
