38 x 61 cm - paper and acrylic on canvas - 2023 La Militante is a “false self-portrait”, that is to say a self-portrait that does not look like me. The idea for the painting was born from a conversation with a buyer, who told me that she had used the money from compensation received to buy me a painting, and that the payers would be crazy about it. rage to know that their money had been used for that. This kind of “revenge”, like resilience, made me think of my own story. When I was 19, I was sexually assaulted by what I thought was a friend. After several years of post-traumatic syndrome, paranoia, nightmares and other joys, I woke up as a feminist. This story would change the course of my life, but also of my art. So, I tell myself that it's pretty stupid for the guy who attacked me. He actually shot himself in the foot. He thought he had power over me, to destroy me, to silence me. But he simply brought to life a feminist activist. An activist who now strives to fight guys like him. So guys, think about this before attacking a girl. Behind a victim, there is potentially a future feminist activist. And it will be your fault. (The butterfly is a universal symbol of metamorphosis and rebirth) Papers used: pages devoted to sexual assault in a book on sexuality, "Repair" and "Accident" cards from 1000 Bornes, butterflies in the Disney Bambi book.

The difficult issue of identity, duality and inner conflict is at the heart of Annabelle's thinking. Whether it is the injunction made to women (on their physique, their activities or their social status) or the personal evolution in our society (where the norm is still the only model and where the difference is stifled), the question is then the same: how do we make our deep convictions coincide with the world around us? How to assert our identity without feeling judged? Can we remain ourselves, flourish, knowing that we are constantly influenced by society, the gaze of others, social networks, money or even success? Annabelle rips, cuts and glues book pages and playing cards on the canvas, which she then covers with acrylic paint. The organic skin of the women that she portrays thus gives way to images and colors that make it possible to transcribe what they feel and who they are.
