I am experimenting with the Chinese technique of woodblock printing and the possibilities of combining printing methods with drawing. Chinese woodcuts are printed on a delicate handmade rice or bamboo paper using specific tools, rice glue and water. Because of the use of water and the delicacy of the paper, it is quite challenging to manage larger formats. I try to combine the subtleness of the technique with the intensity of expression by drawing, first in ink, and then painting while the mounted paper is still wet - I call this process "woodcut fresco". After the mounted paper is dry, I use coloured pencils for finer details or even more expressive finalising of the work, depending on the need. The result is a complex combination of various Eastern and Western approaches to creating a work of art, whether it's about technique or simply the way it's made.
