Alexander Kabanov and Inna Kabanova are a married artist couple whose shared passion for color, craftsmanship, and ornament has blossomed into a unique studio practice: enamel painting on copper. Their work bridges Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions — combining influences from Art Nouveau, Japanese decorative art, and traditional enamel techniques — to create richly detailed, luminous artworks that merge craftsmanship with poetic imagery. They work primarily in vitreous enamel (also known as fired enamel), a medium with a long and storied history: centuries of decorative arts in China, Byzantium, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and Meiji-era Japan have all drawn on the ability of glass fused to metal to produce luminous, jewel-like surfaces. For the Kabanovs, enamel is more than a technique: it is a language of light, texture, and devotion. Each piece is built layer by layer — powdered enamel is carefully applied and fired, over and over — until the surface glows with saturated color, raised linework emerges, and a richness of depth and tactile quality is achieved. Their art reflects a love of theatricality and elegance: from geishas under blooming cherry blossoms to ethereal Art Nouveau figures, harlequins in whimsical costumes, symbolic compositions, and decorative still lifes, their themes show a fascination with beauty, storytelling, cultural motifs, and ornamental detail. Their shared studio, sometimes signing as “Kabanov Art Studio,” presents a cohesive vision — two hands, one sensibility. Alexander tends to focus on decorative figurative work with a whimsical, sometimes theatrical or symbolic vibe — harlequins, dancers, allegorical figures, architectural elements, and rich ornamental backgrounds. Inna, often drawn more to figurative portraiture, Japanese-inspired themes, and delicate compositions, brings subtlety, color harmony, and a refined sensibility — especially in pieces featuring women, symbolic floral or cultural motifs, or serene atmospheres. Together they produce one-of-a-kind enamel paintings, fusing traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic vision. Their pieces stand out for: Exceptional enamel execution — glossy surfaces, radiant colors, raised glass contours, and depth only achievable through multiple kiln firings. Stylistic consistency with artistic range — while each piece tells a different story or evokes a different mood, the body of work retains a recognizable soul.
