Alexander Kabanov and Inna Kabanova are a married artist couple whose shared passion for color, craftsmanship, and ornament has blossomed into a unique studio practice: enamel painting on copper. Their work bridges Eastern and Western aesthetic traditions — combining influences from Art Nouveau, Japanese decorative art, and traditional enamel techniques — to create richly detailed, luminous artworks that merge craftsmanship with poetic imagery.
They work primarily in vitreous enamel (also known as fired enamel), a medium with a long and storied history: centuries of decorative arts in China, Byzantium, Medieval and Renaissance Europe, and Meiji-era Japan have all drawn on the ability of glass fused to metal to produce luminous, jewel-like surfaces.
For the Kabanovs, enamel is more than a technique: it is a language of light, texture, and devotion. Each piece is built layer by layer — powdered enamel is carefully applied and fired, over and over — until the surface glows with saturated color, raised linework emerges, and a richness of depth and tactile quality is achieved.
