About The Artwork

Mixed method wall-hanging, easy to hang from acrylic rod and hooks provided. Materials: Cotton batiks, cotton muslin, cotton batting, chiffon, threads A dreamlike landscape featuring a full moon and three stylized trees, hand stitched to the machine pieced background. My inspiration came from the batik pieces I had acquired over the years. The richness of color, the saturation almost demanded to be used in as they have been here! While working on this piece, I experienced a sense of peace and well-being that I hope the viewer will experience as well. The free-motion quilting and rough-edge applique add an organic dimension to this work. The three trees seem to anchor the moon to the hills below, while its glow reflects off the landscape behind it. The finished piece is more than the sum of its parts. The colors transfix the eye and draw us into a landscape full of peace and quiet solitude.

I started doing needlework at a young age. I moved from one technique to another, branching out into other forms of creative artistry. I grew up in the Adirondack Mountains of northern New York State, surrounded by an abundance of natural beauty, colors and forms. There was a communal mindset of conservation, preservation, and protection, creating a burgeoning ecological awareness in all who lived there. I now live in Florida, where the landscape is different, but the need to preserve and protect remain just as, or even more, relevant. Travelling the world, experiencing different cultures and environments, I take inspiration from where I have been and the feelings these places evoke. I use remnants or recycled textiles and media whenever possible in my work. It connects me to the places I have been and the life I wish others would live. The creative process is multi-level for me. When I get an idea for a piece, I cannot rest until I have gathered my materials and mapped out a design. The first attempts are not always successful, but I continue with the ideas until I find the right textiles and media for their expression. Then the process becomes more of a joyful journey, fitting and re-fitting the pieces, changing color combinations, until no further adjustments are needed. A sense of peace and rightness prevails as the work gets closer to completion.
