About the Artist

Zubik Kateryna

My art is an exploration of pain, strength, and hope.
At the core of my practice are themes that often remain hidden behind closed doors and in the shadows: violence against women and children, the killing of animals, the destruction of nature, and the traumas that pierce the human body, soul, and earth.

A central focus in my work is the female experience. A modern woman is not merely a guardian — she is a warrior. She maintains a fragile balance between self-realization, raising children, caring for the home, and fighting for the right to be heard. This double, and often triple, burden is a powerful combination that shapes a new feminine strength. I embody this role myself — a mother of two, often overwhelmed, often in pain, but always rising again to achieve new heights. In my work, I reflect on this struggle not as victimhood, but as a manifestation of deep dignity, strength, and inner light.

One of the central motifs in my art is skin. It is not merely a surface — it is language, memory, and emotion. Skin holds the traces of life and death, of joy and fear, tenderness and loss. It reveals who we are in our most vulnerable moments. In both humans and animals, skin reflects emotions and the stories of lived experiences.

Skin is also a choice. At different stages in life, we “wear” different skins. Sometimes it is our own — strong and protective. Other times it is someone else’s — leading to the loss of self, with potentially tragic consequences.

Ornaments, protective symbols, and motanka dolls in my work are codes that preserve the history, beliefs, and inner power of a people. Through them, I create a dialogue between the past and the future, making culture feel alive and relevant. It is my response to war and attempts at assimilation — to create, to continue, to remember, and not let our heritage be forgotten.

All of this is united by light.
Light, to me, is a necessity. It is a support for the soul, a point that keeps one from falling into darkness. In my works, light becomes a symbol of hope, eternity, and the enduring power of love.
