ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Oxo Tower Red 2 is part of a series that create bold visual statements. It is made of acrylics, brick dust, sand, iron oxide, other mixed media and resin on box canvas. It forms part of Shelley's London Landmarks Collection – recreating iconic buildings/areas of London. Shelley spent many years working in and around London and loves wandering along the South Bank – immersing herself in its history and maritime heritage. She's long been struck by Oxo Wharf. Originally constructed as a power station, it was subsequently acquired by the manufacturers of Oxo stock cubes. In building the Tower itself, the windows "coincidentally" form the word OXO – as skyline advertising was banned at the time. Shelley's representations of the Oxo Tower and its environs abstract from the Tower itself, the surrounding buildings, the brick, the ironwork, and the signage. They also represents the beach present on the banks of the Thames near the Oxo Tower. She's used found materials in the painting such as brick dust, sand, and iron oxide to reflect the industrial architecture and setting of the Tower. The colour palette is also drawn from the building’s setting. The shapes and the grid of the painting echo the man-made forms. She wanted to emphasise the muscularity and industrial feel of the Wharf. Whilst usually thronging with visitors, the people fade into the background as the buildings dominate. The work can be hung using the hangings attached, or can be hung direct to the wall on screws or nails.

Shelley brings her bold and colourful abstract painting style to life through a series of unique collections. She moved permanently to St Ives, Cornwall after the birth of her first child because of the breath-taking quality and purity of light that it provides. She has a studio in the artists’ quarter of the art colony of St Ives. St Ives is a unique and special place where the light reflects from the waves like no other. Many of Shelley’s collections draw from this magical landscape. From the Vessels paintings, based on the ever-changing harbour scenes, to the Shorelines and Sunsets collections, taking inspiration from the beaches and the rolling Atlantic waves. Perhaps inevitably, when Shelley paints, she is directed by the stunning seascape around her. It is in stark contrast to the City environment where she grew up and lived and worked before. Born in Yorkshire and brought up close to the Northern hubs for coal, steel and rail – a love of industrial urban landscape has shaped Shelley’s interest in the real, unpolished architecture of that era. She also loves the sleek city skyline of today. In her work, Shelley finds herself blending images of steel furnaces and coal mines from her northern roots with modern cityscapes and the contrasting beauty of Cornwall. Her artworks represent a strong melding of the seeming dichotomy of the city vista and the coastal environment. It is not simply the landscape that Shelley abstracts from however. She is driven by the feelings, interpretations and stories that run through our day to day world. Her works express a moment in time and of life. She combines textures and often adds emotive song lyrics with bold colour. Texture and symbolism surface within the blocks of colour to tell more comprehensive stories. They evoke a deep sense of place and the passing of time.
