A collection titled “Portraits of Passing Time” uses Xerox, ink, glass and acrylic as mediums and materials. The aim of this project is not to capture a moment in time, but rather to capture time itself creating an aged effect I call the “texture of time” in its worn out and raw ambient appearance. Surrounded by chaotic script which when recognized can create a sense of recall to the viewer. This project is a type of conjuring of shadows, specifically the shadows of past spoken words contained in our memories which are themselves nothing more than stories wrapped in words. Words, as the line, divide and connect. They are the protagonist of our histories. Xerox photocopies of photos I took from NYC over the span of a decade are also included and text goes through a process of being copied and recopied to get the desired effect. Afterwards the ink is ripped from the image and applied to the canvas. Here the brush stroke itself is of more importance than the object it seeks to create. Thus to bring out this effect the stroke is applied to paper, however not directly as paper will not often respond well to the brush, rather it is applied to the canvas at various layers and paper is pressed to the canvas to rip the stroke from the canvas, a primitive form of transfer if one can call it that. This form of transfer is reoccurring using wood, glass and cotton applied to various surfaces to create different affects. The effect is ambient, as memories are ambient and emulated through the completed works, this is also applied to glass surfaces in which the viewer can see themselves in a type of repetitive anti-autoportrait or anti-portrait depending on who the observer is.

Vietnam
David Ch. Evans is an American artist residing in Hanoi. Working across multiple mediums to explore the connection between language and objects. His works depict the narratives and non narratives of space which he calls Concrete Mythology that create densities of significance made visible through text fields where words act as protagonist and antagonist, as divider and unifier, to create a composition of meaning on the canvas. These visual relationships between language, spaces and objects make evident the disjointed nature of urban centers and create a « language beyond linguistics »
