Ricky Lodewyk Karamoy (In Memoriam 1959- 2019) carved his journey on becoming one of Indonesia’s contemporary artists through the highlights of his artistic establishments in the 90s eras. Born in Bandar Lampung Province of South Sumatra in 1959, Ricky grew up in Yogyakarta where he developed a great interest in art, a beginning of a creative venture that later moved him to Ubud, Bali in the late 80s, a paradise turned a home of 40 years where he spent most of his time dwelling in philosophies of painting, mask carving and batik techniques, as well as learning from local senior art residents in Bali. Driven by the need to express, to visualize inner mood, as well as to break free from the institutional process of art making, Ricky then chose painting as a main language to speak up by, resulting in many series of playful, outspoken masterpieces. Ricky tells stories of his life mostly through contemporary paintings, in which most of his works tend to feature symbolic figures such as fish to epitomize life in the Universe and human character to illustrate the happenings, complemented by the application of cubical structures within the context of the paintings. His use of bold colors, wild structural strokes and objective symbols indicates his adaptation of both abstract expressionism and cubism. His paintings have been collected and featured by galleries in Indonesia, Australia and Europe. Aside from having led a number of art exhibitions and being involved in collaborations with art communities all around Indonesia and overseas, Ricky created Kuramaya Gallery and Tigaman Gallery in 1990, art spaces that ran for close to a decade located in Sanggingan, Ubud. Ricky then moved to Kuta in 1999 and engaged in one of Bali’s biggest artist communities ‘Bunga Bunga Bali’ based in Kuta Central Park at the time. Kuramaya Art remains to be his private studio in Denpasar. Instagram .art for further information.
