ABOUT THE ARTWORK

In the Back Garden Series I save all the dead and sometimes hidden, yet ever so very beautiful in their fallen solitude, leaves, seeds, twigs, petals, feathers, carcasses, peels, pods, shells, bark, berries, even bits of soil and stones, and more. The Back Garden is so loved and protected by our two dogs, Carmina and Bella. We have created a Boxwood Forest where the two dogs have their secret pathways and hideaways under and among the twenty or so five-to-six feet tall bushes along with lots of honeysuckle, and perennial flowers. A bird bath, a babbling fountain, and feeders of all kinds welcome all birds, finches, sparrows, grackles, robins, humming birds, chickadees, wrens, starlings, mourning doves, nut hatches, bluejays, woodpeckers, flickers, pigeons, and more. Owls and hawks and falcons come to prey on rodents living in tunnels under the bushes. Insects too enjoy the summer Back Garden, spiders, fireflies, butterflies, cicadas, gnats, ants, bees, wasps, and more. In the evening sky above, bats fly and dive feeding on mosquitos. We humans, too, delight in the Back Garden through all the seasons, eating meals on the tiny patio and spending evenings as light fails and darkness surrounds all of us and the moon shines down. We all do so love our little Back Garden.

It could be said I work at challenging systems, traditions, orders, and beliefs that can categorize one's life. Perhaps it is as my friend, Fred Dunn, quotes from Carl Jung, "Order and meaning are things that have become and are no longer becoming." To help me understand the organic movement within the whole and so defy the predictable, I start by keeping in mind, when writing and when painting, the six intrinsic shapes of nature: the oval, the wave, the meander, the honeycomb, the branch, the spiral. Yes, I know, perhaps another set of controls, yet, if we have these life forms in mind when approaching the arts, we might, due to the width and depth of these complex intrinsic shapes, form a new question, note a moment in passing, save a shadow, find a clarity, form another question, and the next work of art. As my works unfold, I do so love and need an on-going conversation with others, as it seems the act of "being" cannot so readily exist in a vacuum. In both writing and painting, our purpose is to take joy in the moment as we merge with the medium and each other, while knowing the process of each piece, each question holds the past as well as possibility for a new beginning, all an intricate and delicate dance to which I invite you and others.
