The Hackney Marshes lie just 500m from my front door and with the pandemic restricting our movements I was drawn closer into this landscape. The daily routine of walking across this landscape provided calm, a necessity that became a large influence on my new body of work called ‘Interactions.’ The importance of the marshes became integral and these fundamental feelings are reflected through my use of emotive colour and expressive brushstrokes, capturing a personal response to the energy and beauty of the urban-rural landscape often lost or taken for granted. I am fascinated by the use of colour and how it can influence feeling and change perception, prompting interactions that ‘feel’ rather than ‘see’. Recurring themes of opposites play with analogue & digital, the natural & hyperreal and blur the lines of what is real and imaginary. I use a blend of analogue and digital printmaking processes combined with acrylic painting. Preliminary colour studies in the form of sketches, photography and collage are developed in the studio. Layers of acrylic paint are energetically applied and wiped back, the movement of paint and the unexpected imperfections of printmaking give expressive depth. Digital experimentation creates unexpected colour that distorts reality prompting a new response. These studies then inform painting and traditional printmaking, and the cycle continues. From the urban edgelands of Hackney Marsh to the vastness of the Lake District there is a thread which ties ancestry and place in Lucy Merriman’s paintings. She follows a path between tension and control, allowing the materials to flow freely between energy, simplicity and yet keeping a sense of space and calm. Reflecting her experiences in the landscape she evokes feelings of change, growth and the passage of time. Lucy’s printmaking frequently draws inspiration from nature, entwining organic forms with abstract elements to explore the interrelation of life and the environment prompting viewers to consider their relationship with the natural world. Lucy is an emerging British artist based in East London. She graduated from Nottingham Trent University with a BA in Textile Design, establishing her first print studio in Shoreditch 1992. In the lockdown of 2020, Lucy shifted focus from design to artistic practice primarily in painting and printmaking. Since then, Lucy has widely exhibited at group shows and art fairs including; The Affordable Art Fair Battersea and Hampstead, The Other Art Fair London and Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. She was selected for ING Discerning Eye 2023, Mall Galleries and is currently a keyholder at East London Printmakers. Lucy has recently completed a Year Long Studio Practice course at Newlyn School of Art. Her work is held in private collections around the world. Lucy lives with her husband and children close to Hackney Marshes and the River Lea.
