Silleven 2 - Limited Edition of 20 Artwork

Stilleven (or still-life) paintings were popular in the Netherlands in the 17th Century. They symbolised an era of wealth, scientific advancement and creativity; yet, despite this, numerous outbreaks of Plague occurred which is analogous to our world today. Created using a flatbed scanner, ‘Stilleven’, is a series of images that form a contemporary Australian interpretation of these popular still-life paintings of flowers. Whilst both interpretations evoke serenity, they are manufactured in entirely different ways. The Dutch masters spent months painting flowers that were mostly grown in disparate regions and were never in season at the same time. Essentially, they were painting flowers that could never have existed together. Using modern photographic-related media, these images are generated in a much shorter space of time and speak to the cohesiveness of an ecosystem that Dutch still-life never spoke to. Most of the work created with modern media is meticulously undertaken after the initial image has been created using a scanner. The Stilleven series is a contemporary expression of art historical narrative conceived by changing up the media.
