Skyscape 02: Milford Track, New Zealand Artwork

Limited edition 10/25, printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art Photorag paper. Signed and numbered. My work is predominantly in a single range of color. It represents a specific place and time which I photograph, print and hand cut into thousands of circles. I choose a fundamental element, like a sky or an ocean, to be subjected to a process of color selection and extraction. Hand drawn circles from dozens of photographs are cut out, selected at random without consideration of size or color, and meticulously arranged into patterns on a field of white. The variety in color and pattern of the final work are a result of systematic mark making of the similar but unique elements. The rigor of this process is all important. I struggle to define and describe the mental and emotional impact of it. It is peaceful. It is rewarding. It is calming. The mass accumulation of thousands of circles is especially satisfying as they begin to take on a collective character. My work is defined in that unique, collective character of similar circles expressed as a unified field of color.
