About The Artwork

The Afterlife is nr. 3 from the Heroes* series. Dearly beloved We are gathered here today To get through this thing called life Electric word life It means forever and that's a mighty long time But I'm here to tell you There's something else The after world A world of never ending happiness You can always see the sun, day or night With these words you’re guided into Princes unprecedented ‘Lets Go Crazy’. The afterworld, that’s were he's at now. Hopefully it fits his expectations. This is how I got introduced to Prince in 1984. Not entirely true if I am honest. Before that, my neighbour was complete and utterly Prince adept and played his songs virtuous on his electric guitar. He was the first to introduce Prince to me and at the same time impressing me with his guitar skills. But really, I was not directly blown away by Prince. At first I thought he was a big egomaniac that looked and acted like Jimmy Hendrix. Of course, I stood corrected. So the second introduction was at a party of a friend. She or he (I a can’t remember) had rented the ‘video’ Purple Rain. A thin storyline but the music had impact. (At the same time New Years Day of U2 was high in the charts- music that flips you inside out- an urgent-force of nature). So here you are, 14-15 years old and get slapped in the face by this sense of excitement- change- revolt-outrageousness- it could happen, it might happen because it was present, this out of control energy. At the same time I was discovering my self as being not one of the flock but as an individual waiting to get shape . Due to an inborn aversion to traditions and expectations, I felt kind of lost from time to time. It seems so much easier, fitting and blending as a piece of a greater puzzle. This was –unfortunately- not for me. If it wasn’t for them, my heroes, I might remain puzzled how to fit in my entire life. But the fact they existed proofed that oddness was in fact a great asset of life! As for Prince, as this is his proverbial stage, he was unparalleled in his flood of creativity. He had so much of it that it flowed constently, always ahead of everyone, uncontained and with great and visible joy. This man, a musician pur sang, a musician that got annoyed over commercial and shallow produced music. Who choose not to become a SLAVE of the music industry, followed his own path. And at the same time made musical flaws and mistakes too. In my line of work there is a lot of freedom but also a lot of rigThe Afterlife is nr. 3 from the Heroes* series. I can experience art on many levels and in many different ways. Then I look for aesthetics and eloquence but also for a particular angle. I make contemporary engaged art. It has a certain urgency. It is reflecting us, people and the zeitgeist. Images speak louder than words and basically appeal very directly to our feelings. My images are something of a mix between activism and philosophy, they want to engage in dialogue.” I am born in Hoorn (NH) (1970) and have been working as a visual artist since 1994. My studio is located at the Rieteweg 10 in Zwolle. I am a multidisciplinary artist. My autonomous work includes painting, collage, installation, digital art, photo manipulation, video art and 3d. I also work on commission and on a project basis. Typical for my autonomous work is the key role for man in its shape and behaviour. It is often a reflection of current social themes, but also mundane and personal issues are important sources of inspiration. Through small interventions, repetitions, inversions, or breaking surfaces with architectural forms, a new image is created in a somewhat familiar image. Although my work can be seen as aesthetic, it often conceals certain uneasiness, abrasive aesthetics. This duality or ambiguity is also a recurring theme. Do you see what you see? The resulting images are often on the cutting edge of fiction, realism, graphic and plastic. Contemporary (sur)realist?- My work cannot be placed in a tradition or movement. There are certainly surrealistic elements in my work and occasionally some abstraction, but in terms of style I draw from (contemporary) realism. Until now, I have been able to express myself best in the figurative, although I do not rule out anything for the future. As far as I am concerned, art is fluid and and artist never stop evolving. I do not wish to limit myself, neither to a medium, nor to autonomous art. I see myself much more as a conduit of concepts and ideas. Often my ideas are interspersed with philosophical questions and/or social themes that occupy me. I therefore sometimes set myself the task of casting these in project form, if only within the limitations of visual art. This has resulted in a number of projects varying from social to future-oriented.
