Born in Champagne, France, Jean-Remi Barbier moved to Canada to study and then arrived in New York in 2015 where he was first exposed to the great plethora of art and artists the city has to offer. It is in 2020 that he began working on his own artworks as a medium to relate on his views and emotions on today’s world. Barbier has always sought inspirations in the streets of Manhattan. The up-and-coming artist chose J-Art as his alias in the art’s universe. Having an unconditional fascination for skulls, he learnt more about the vanity (vanitas) style of still-life painting. The self-taught artist often creates artwork with skull imageries with various variations influenced by the modern-day consumer society. J-Art likes to experiment boldly but follow his inspiration while applying fine attention to details and connotations. Today, creating art has been an essential part of his personal development and a preferred means of expression. Living in this metropolis, the emerging artist draws great influence from Neo-pop, abstract expressionism and street art. He particularly enjoys working on his rooftop overlooking New York and channel the city’s energy on top of his regular studio session. While canvas is the preferred space of expression, it is noteworthy that a majority of his current work is done by blending acrylic painting, spray painting, splashing and other mixed media including the constant use of collage technique with newspapers and magazine.
