A scene from Eocene Messel, Germany. The Messel site is known from its beautifully preserved fossils, found in oil shale in the pit that is now a heritage site. Messel was a lush rainforest about 47 million years ago, and home to many early mammals, like small horses, tapirs and primates. The most famous one, Darwinius masillae, is sinking to the bottomof the lake in this painting. We can also see alligator jars, shrimp, water beetle and damselfly larvae. This painting appears as an illustration in the award winning book "Ida", about the life of the amazing primate fossil
