Once, during an interview in a German Art magazine, the Maestro blurted out that he had made love to no less than thirteen women of royal heritage, young and old, married and unmarried, by the time he was forty. Except for a few relationships that were made public...and two that became national scandals...he would not name the rest. He did admit that he had truly loved only one of the women. There have been all kinds of speculation as to whom that may be or if she is still alive. Why did such wealthy aristocratic women gravitate to this man who had lived a hard life in earlier times? A man who had surely come from the opposite end of the spectrum in European society? In the interview, Togo said that he believed it was exactly that reason why they were attracted to him...along with his good looks, sexual prowess and magnetic personality, as well as, the fact that he was a bohemian artist, an outsider and a complete wonder to many of these women. The kind of man they only knew from works of fiction. Nevertheless, so he said, he did not treat these women any differently than he had the prostitutes with whom he was raised. In fact, he went on to praise the working women he had known for the reason that they had chosen the life they led...while the royal women were given theirs. After all, the royal women were only what they were by accident of birth. They had not worked for such a position in life. There was no sense of achievement or accomplishment or self-satisfaction in any of them. What was worse, most of them had little or no sense of humor. (Except, perhaps, for the only one he had truly loved?) When asked if he ever thought he might have been just a passing fancy or plaything for the nobility...he admitted that such an affair cuts both ways.
