About The Artwork

This piece is a textural study inspired by a trip to scotland where we were hiking in an area with hundreds of these mushrooms. The mushrooms are linked to Christmas time in a curious way. In pagan times the mushrooms were used for their psychedelic properties however would make you very sick if you tried to eat them. The reindeer however are well adapted to eating the mushrooms and they make up a huge part of their diet during winter months. At some point our pagan ancestors realised that drinking the urine of the reindeer would allow them to experience the effects of the mushroom without the harmful effects. They would follow the reindeer through the forests and eat the yellow snow left behind leading to visions of flying reindeer and glowing noses that persist in our culture to this day. The piece itself is comprised of a painted and varnished mixture of paper, glue and concrete and I have used hay mixed with paint for the grass area then torched to remove the excess and apply texture to the varnish applied. The texture mimics the gnarled half decayed top of the mushroom in late stages of bloom with purple spores rising into the air around it. The work is striking and pops from the frame in a satisfying way. I hope it will appeal to lovers of counter culture and tactile people. It is very sturdy and satisfying to the touch.

Artist from Yorkshire UK with a love for travelling and animals and the natural world. I am a cynic and thoroughly disillusioned with the world we live in but find joy in nature and creativity. I consider myself a left wing humanist and I am interested in art as a means of protest particularly against capitalism and the destruction of our planet. I am very inspired by my time in Australia and New Zealand and like to show respect to other cultures in my work. My style is varied. I love abstract works and like to experiment with texture but animals also feature heavily in my work.
