My name is Christabel Dunham and I work under the name "Miss Vincent" WHO IS MISS VINCENT? Alkaline Trio will tell you that the stars at night are big and bright deep in my eyes and that I am the Queen of Pain. HOWEVER I share nothing more than my name with that Queen. I once thought I was Banksey in a Tyler Durton kinda way then I realized that I was just Batman and no one was really bothered. During in the day though when I am not out fighting crimes on the streets of Gotham City I am a 32 year old Fine Art graduate. Remember when you were little and you were convinced that you could see faces in the dark? Scared of monsters under the bed? Convinced there are faces in the shadows? When the human brain is presented with a complex pattern / a mass of darkness / clouds in the sky we will seek to see a human face, something recognizable to us. My work is about all of the above. Its about taking an image and stripping it back to black lines. Its about pop culture. Its about me being told I was incapable of GCSE art. I'm influenced by EVERYTHING, right down to the annoying gum stuck to the bottom of an exam desk. Music is my muse, Gaga is my mother, Bowie is my father and The Smiths are my cool art school friends. I want to live in the 80's in a John Hughes movie. Fashion is my soul, I eat, sleep and breathe Viv Westwood. Warhol and Lichtenstein hang out with me behind the bike sheds smoking menthol cigs. BUT WHY? Why? well in days gone by art and portraiture was so incredibly important, it told tales of religious stories, historical events, it was used to show people what their ruler actually looked like... It was a genuine paid trade, as important as the butcher, baker and the candle stick maker. Then photography happened (DAM YOU Mr Fox Talbot) and art had to take a turn in a different direction, it became expressive, emotional, abstract and surreal. Now, although portraits aren't needed, I fit in to the category where they are WANTED. Photographs... you know the deal you find yourself endlessly skipping through photos of this party and that day at Alton Towers on facebook... SO why not shake it back up? Why not take the human face and make it so unrecognizable that its the only thing you can recognize? For me its all about capturing a personality in black and white, telling a story in one film frame, and proving that "art" is still alive and didn't die when Damien Hirst dipped a shark in formaldehyde.
